Dr. Nathan Kotney had been working since the crack of dawn to make all of his appointments. Being one of the few lisensed doctors on the island kept him more than busy on the best of days. Between the Garrison and that stupid rock wall he could feel himself heading towards an early retirement. That was how he had ended up in the break room, spread out on the couch and attempting to convince himself to go back to his office to finish paperwork.
Deciding that a nap would do him more good right now, nathan shrugged off his coat and used it as a blanket, briefly looking at the name tag that displayed KOTNEY in bright letters on his pocket. Letting it fall back into place, he set an alarm on his phone and dozed for a moment, oblivious to anyone who came and went in the room.

Tylar had been hovering in the emergency room, watching her co-worker, Amy, treat Trinity Blake. That girl was so famous, it was hard not to watch her as she smiled cutely and shrugged when asked simple questions. How cute...
A voice called down a hallway and got her attention announced pizza in the break room. As if on cue, her stomach let out a dissatisfied rumble and she pushed off the counter, bored with the star-stuck feeling she had. Tylar hadn't been working her very long, and she was far from familiar with the upper division staff. The promise of pizza was not a false one and she giggled as she pulled a piece of cheese pizza out and started chowing down, heading for the couch only to be dismayed by it's occupation. She huffed and narrowed her eyes, trying to get a look at the man who seemed weirdly familiar to her, although she couldn't place him. Her pizza slice fell to the floor and her mouth dropped open, "Nathaniel Kotney?" Tylar's eyes were wide as she match the face with the many pictures she had grown up looking at.

Nathan started awake at the sound of an unfamiliar voice saying his name. Sitting up quickly, he looked at the young woman standing across from him. "Yes, is everything alright?" He asked, assuming that there had been an emergency if an unfamiliar healer had come looking for him. Then again, something about her was oddly familiar. To be exact, she Looked like the girl in the pictures Jessia sent him on occasion. She couldn't be though. Tylar was at home with his wife, where he couldn't be.
Noticing her shocked expression, he stood up to meet her where she stood. "Alright Ms...Evans?" He started, looking at her name tag and then stopping at the familiar name. That was Tylars last name, wasn't it? Taking a breath to steady his mind, he finally spoke again "Tylar? Is your name Tylar?" It was impossible, but he couldn't help but ask.

It surprised Tylar that the first emotion she felt was anger. Pure, raging anger. For this man that lied to her mother, for the man that was supposed to be saving lies. He was sleeping on a couch on an island for cowards. She took a step back from him, "Don't come near me, you liar." Her eyes were filling with tears and she tried to head toward the door but the way things had happened, he was squarely between her and the exit, "What are you doing here?" She demanded, completely taken aback by the entire situation.

Nathan frowned. His initial shock was wearing off fast and he wasn't sure why she was so angry. "Liar? Of course I lied. It's dangerous for mortals to be around us right now. It's dangerous for them to know." Now he was beginning to understand. Tylar thought that he had abandoned his wife to come to Concordia. "I only left for Jessia's sake. If it weren't for her...I would still be on the mainland." He had a life there, a good practice and a beautiful home. Why would he have left if it wasn't for a purpose?

Tylar was shaking. She wanted to believe him, and she knew that Jessia would have just been happy to see him. She loved him so much...
"You were never there. She said you would come home soon and be a dad and then you never showed." She rolled her eyes, "She's probably still waiting for you. For years she's been waiting." Why did Tylar even care that much? She had a feeling it was less for Jessia's sake and more for her own. She had always wanted a father.

"Because I was here, waiting out this war and doing my part. If I could've brought you, or Jess, I would've done it ages ago. Look around you." He said with a weary, generalized gesture. "Name a mortal on this island. There isn't a way." Settling on to the side arm of the couch, he waited to take the verbal beating that he deserved. "Do you honestly think I would've stayed away from her, from you? I've always wanted a daughter, and then I almost had one. You've been there that whole time, so close and so far away. If I thought for a moment that I could've protected both of you, I would leave right now and take you back with me. But I can't. I'm no soldier, and even they don't leave the island."

Deep down she knew he was right, but she was still upset about it. Shaking from heavy breathing, Tylar finally started crying, "You're supposed to be with her. She misses you so much..." She swallowed and sat down in one of the plastic chairs around the break room table, "I just don't understand...what are the odds...?"

Nathan sat down beside Tylar, deciding to ignore the comment about how much Jess missed him. Though he was concerned for his wife's well being, it didn't hold a candle to what he was witnessing with the young woman in front of him. "A billion to one or more." He said after a long moment, extending a hand to rest on top of one of hers for a moment in a gesture meant to be comforting. "I'm glad your not here alone though. It can be lonely and strange on this island. I'll call it the silver lining." Not to mention that if he had staid, jess wouldn't have had the need to foster a child. She would've never met Tylar, and he wouldn't wish that on either of them.

Tylar resisted the urge to pull her hand back from his. If seemed weird to think of this man as her father so she decided she wouldn't for now. She sat up straight and looked at him full in the face, "I'm not going to call you dad." She had stopped crying and her voice was calm and steady, "But I will let you buy me lunch tomorrow." A bright green water started to buzz on her wrist telling her the break was over, "I have to go check on my patients." SHe stood and smiled a small, sad smile at him before waving and leaving the room.
